Dr. Kirby completed his Bachelor of Science degree in animal physiology at the University of California at Davis in 1979 with high honors. He received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco in 1983, graduating in the top 6% of his class. His first year surgical residency was at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Palo Alto with clinics an rotations through Stanford Hospital. He then went on to do a second year of postgraduate training in the Biomechanics Fellowship at the California College of Podiatric Medicine where he also received his Master of Science Degree in Podiatric Biomechanics. After completing his Biomechanics Fellowship in 1985, Dr. Kirby moved to Sacramento where he has been practicing podiatry in an orthopedic group for the past fifteen years. His practice specialties include podiatric surgery, sports medicine, foot orthotics, and pediatric and adult foot and gait abnormalities. In addition to his practice, Dr. Kirby is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Biomechanics at the California College of Podiatric Medicine, is a Contributing Editor to the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, is a Manuscript Reviewer for the Australasian Journal of Podiatric Medicine, and is Chairman of Podiatric Surgery at Methodist Hospital in Sacramento. He is Board Certified in the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine and is a Qualified Medical Examiner for the State of California. Dr. Kirby has written extensively on the subjects of foot orthotics, biomechanics and sports medicine. In 1997, he authored a book, "Foot and Lower Extremity Biomechanics: A Ten Year Collection of Precision Intricast Newsletters", which has been sold to podiatrists in over seven countries. He has authored or coauthored a total of eleven scientific/medical papers in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, he has authored chapters on the conservative treatment of pediatric flatfoot deformity and on troubleshooting foot orthotics in two podiatric medical textbooks. Dr. Kirby is frequently invited to lecture both nationally and internationally on the subjects of foot orthotics, biomechanics and sports medicine and has given numerous lectures in New Zealand, Great Britain, Canada, and throughout the United States. In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, Dr. Kirby is an accomplished marathon runner and still continues to run for exercise. He ran competitively for the cross country and track teams at the University of California at Davis.
