Ankle Sprain and Heel Pain - Surgery?

November 06, 2001

Question:
In the past 11 yrs I have sprained my ankle and fractured it twice. Recently I fell again. Per xrays they said I had no fractures in the er. I went to a foot dr. and he said I have a heel spur and some torn ligaments on the ankle. He wants to do surgery. I never had pain before in my heel until I fell recently. So if I had a spur why would it just start hurting now. I feel burning and pain if I do alot of walking in the heel and foot. Would you recomend the surgery or to get a second opion?

Doctor's Reply:

Without knowing all of the details of your problem I would suggest that you talk to your podiatrist about this more fully. Heel spurs are often an incidental finding on a x-ray. They are frequently associated with heel pain. Many doctors feel that the spur is part of the problem. Many other doctors do not. Ask your doctor about inserts for the shoes called orthotics. If you have suffered a recent injury then consider resting the area for 3 to 4 weeks by wearing a below the knee removable cast.
