Stress Fractures and Neuroma

April 16, 2001

Question:
Six months ago I has a sudden violent pain in the bottom of my left foot originating on the bottom of the toe next to the liitle toe and the middle toe. Removing my shoe gave me relief. After the passage of several weeks I began to be awakened nightly with severe pain in the foot accompanied by redness and swelling. I consulted a podiatrist who said I had the classic symptoms of a Morton's neuroma. Cortisone injections did not help nor did numbing the foot. He eventually sent me to an Orthopedic specialist who ordered a ct-scan which revealed two stress fractures and a torn ligament. He placed my foot in a "boot" yet the nighttime pain worsened as did the swelling and redness. He feels there is probably also a nerve disorder. The neurologist he sent me to prescribed 300 mgs. of neurotin nightly which does help the nighttime pain yet after the three middle toes have started to rapidly turn to the left and the pain in the two toes has worsened. I am despairing and don't know what to do. An MRI was ruled out due to the fact I have metal clips in the cervical area as a result of a laminectomy in 1985. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Doctor's Reply:
The stress fractures can cause pressure on the nerve resulting in a neuroma. You might consider surgery to remove the neuroma if other treatments are not working.
