Question:
My mother(age 83)has diabetes, Type I and my brother(age 62) has the same type. My mother's stays under control, but my brother has great fluctuations ranging from 500 down to 50. He keeps his weight down, is very active (he's a golf pro), runs, skiis, etc. He was hospitalized this week for another high count..(500) They got it down too low (to 80) and finally got it stabilized. He went home, felt good one day and it is back to 350 again. What could be making him have these great fluctuations and what can he do or where can he go to find out what the problem is. Neither the doctor or the hospital seem to offer any help for him. Thank you for any suggestions.
Doctor's Reply:
Some patients suffer from "brittle" diabetes. This results in wide fluctuations in the blood sugars. An endocrinologist would be the best doctor to treat this condition. Consider making an appointment with a new doctor and see what they have to offer.
