Pain in the Heel

October 26, 2000

Question:
Doctor, I am a 41 year old female. I have episodes of heel pain in my right foot. This pain only occurs maybe once or twice a week. It is a very sharp stabbing pain that only last for a few seconds. It does not hurt to stand or walk on it. On my job I do a combination of walking and sitting all day (12 hour shifts, 3 days a week). Is this something that will get worse and can you tell me what this might be?

Doctor's Reply:
You have the early signs of plantar fasciitis. It is likely if you start aggressively start stretching your calf muscles your pain will go away. Visit our site www.PodiatryNetwork.com and check under "foot disorders" and then go to "treatments" There you will find a discussion on stretching. If you do not get better make an appointment with a podiatrist in your area.
